About

Beyond the raw force of nature, the Tarawera eruption also holds a deeper, more complex story, one that intertwines the fate of the people of Te Wairoa and surrounding villages at Tarawera, the early colonial settlers, and the timeless spirit of the land itself.

In this interpretation, Te Whare Tapere o Te Arawa explore not just the eruption’s destruction, but the resilience and the echoes of a culture that has lived with the land for centuries. Through the lens of memory, we seek to understand the power of nature, the fragility of human life, and the ongoing legacy of this cataclysmic event.

    Still Marveling...

by CR (Candy) Green on 24/06/2026

As an American transplant and after almost 30 years living in New Zealand, I ¨just happened¨ to be flying into Rotorua (my first visit) to meet a friend on the day of the matinee of this incredibly wonderful production. A few days before I ¨just happened"to see an interview on the Breakfast show about it. I promptly got tickets. My friend and I were both blown away by the very professional production from staging, to costuming, to voices, to lighting, to sound-- to it ALL. The packed auditorium, made up of families and children, was rocking with joy. I ´just happened"to speak with one of the directors afterwards and could not help saying, ¨This should make it to Broadway.¨ This director wondered if there was too much Maori language used and not enough English, but I assured her that the brilliant staging and acting perfectly communicated this historic and timely story with perfect humour and pathos. I am still marveling...Thank you to all who were part of this production. Now, how can it be taken on the road so, at least, the rest of the country, including schools, can see it?

Brilliant world class production that would match any show on Broadway. Many thanks to The Sir Howard Morrison Centre for supporting Te Whare Tapere o Te Arawa to continously produce shows of the highest calorie. Can we please have another season of Tērā te Auahi?

This show was amazing! So professional. I do not speak te reo, but was still able to completely follow the story. If you can possibly go see it, do! Well done to everyone involved.
