Fat Freddy’s Drop Announce Based On A True Story 21st Anniversary Tour 2026

Doing it for the love of music, legendary band Fat Freddy's Drop are returning to the stage in 2026 to perform their ground-breaking debut album Based On A True Story.

The 51 dates across Australia, Aotearoa, Europe & UK will be Freddy’s first shows following the sudden death of founding band member Chris ‘MU’ Faiumu. The band is united in its decision to continue with this long-planned tour.

Lead singer Dallas Tamaira says, ‘It’s important for us to honour the intentions we had with MU and playing this album live is part of that.’

Based On A True Story was independently released in 2005, an album of 10 fresh slices of future funk, with surprises, fakes & freaky sidesteps. In a historic run, the album became Aotearoa’s Longest-Charting Album with 111 weeks in the Top 40, won eight NZ Music Awards and took out Giles Peterson’s Worldwide Music Awards in the UK.

‘This was the band’s first full length studio album and its success was the springboard for what has been an incredible journey together’, explains saxophonist Scott Towers. ‘We want to pay tribute to the music, to MU and the band he established. And, of course, to play to our fans around the world who have supported us through everything.’

Fat Freddy's Drop are the G.O.A.T

by Quiet Dancing Queen on 21/05/2026Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall - Auckland

This gig was one of the best I have been to. The lighting, back-drop, and stage set up was cool, creative, and engaging. The artists, the music, and the performance were, of course, phenomenal. All members of Fat Freddy's Drop are incredible musicians with great stage presence and charisma. The venue was cool, and the crowd was so passionate; you could feel the connection and energy resonating and reflecting between the stage and crowd. There was such a special feeling and sense of aroha, respect, and inclusion towards MU too. Unfortunately there were some overly drunk people, bumping into others. pushing through the crowd, and distracting from the artists on stage. There were also quite a lot of inconsiderate individuals forcing their way through the crowd to the front. However, overall it was an awesome gig that will forever remain a nostalgic and positive memory for me.

    Best concert ever!

by Julz on 17/05/2026Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall - Auckland

All I can say is wow! I have been to a few Fat Freddy's Drop concerts but this one just blew me away. I was a little concerned about the venue as I have only seen them perform at outside venues. But I shouldn't have worried once the sound man got the mix right, the concert just took off. Their last song (Shiverman) was just insane!!!! I would totally recommend going to one of their concerts. It should be on everyone's bucket list.

Good to see the Freddies again

by Louis on 17/05/2026Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall - Auckland

FFD rocked the Town Hall. The new guitarist, drummer and bass brought their own touches to the classic Freddies sound. It was a banger of a performance.

    For the love of MUsic

by Spaige on 17/05/2026Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall - Auckland

What a night! Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous evening with the FFD team! The town hall is always an excellent venue and the sound was on point with the various musical instruments. Special thanks to the security team that kept bringing cups of cold water to the front of GA, it was really appreciated and should be done at every show if not already.
