About
Flavio Villani returns to Auckland Concert Chamber with an evocative solo recital interwoven with visual art by celebrated Aotearoa artist Star Gossage.
The evening pairs classics — from Bach–Busoni’s Chaconne in D minor and Brahms’s Rhapsody in B minor and Intermezzi Op.117 to Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue — with Villani’s own In Memoriam Suite, a quietly introspective cycle of original movements. These works combined invite listeners into the gradual unfolding of an inner journey — one in which music becomes a way of tracing echoes, clarifying emotion, and discovering how transformation often emerges quietly, through attention, resonance, and the passages we carry within ourselves.
Throughout the concert, projections of Gossage’s recent works will respond to and amplify the emotional arc of the music; following the performance, a selection of her paintings will be exhibited in the Town Hall foyer.
Flavio Villani, Italian–New Zealand pianist, currently completing a DMA in Music (University of Waikato) is known for the expressive depth, thoughtful programming, and lyrical intensity of his performances. His debut album, launching in 2026, draws on much of this repertoire.
“Flavio's compositions were deeply thought through, played with a delicate touch and adding an immense depth to the performance. He managed to draw exquisite sounds from our instrument. He brought such honesty to his performance — it was an incredibly moving experience for all of us who were lucky enough to be there.” Tempo Rubato, March 2024
